I think if you look at it, in Full Metal Panic! episode 9, they say Takuma was reformed to be a Whispered, and whether or not his treatment was a success. If Takuma was already a Whispered, why would they bother to reform him? They could have kept him away to use his talents and gotten another who is confirmed not to be a Whispered to pilot the Behemoth and be reformed. We know Amalgam had to do with the Behemoth, but they might have been also responsible for the reformation, which would explain using their resources on Takuma. Seina did say she pretended to be his sister so that she could use him.

Edit: A little late, but I don't wish to damage this topic's purity of staying on topic to the original creator's intentions. This is the end for me of being wayward from the original topic.

Alright, I decided to clear this up, so...I found the place you're talking about. Firstly, the official dubs:

Quote:

"
Kalinin: They performed a drug test and found TI 9-71 in his blood

Tessa: and that's why they had me called in, right?

K: The japanese government took him into costity, and we had no other choice but to ask you madam captain to come in to observe him.

K: You're the only one who can judge whether he, Takuma, has been reformed to use the lambda driver, and whether or not the so called treatment was a success. He's shown symptoms of the treatments side effects - manifestations of sudden violence, defects in memory

T: I went over the numbers on the way here, but I didn't see anything to account of what you've said.
"

What is interesting is that they speak of this reformation of something that has to do with 'going over the edge' and 'becomming tainted'.

Never at one point is it mentioned that the reformation makes him any kind of whispered. But it isn't said, either, that he was any kind of whispered in the first place.

What is altogether more interesting is how Takuma is spoken of in Manga volume 4 page 151 - there, Sousuke confirms that Takuma is in fact a whispered, but seems 'a little different from Kaname'. In the manga, there is no word on any kind of reformation, he is simply using a drug that allows him to use the lambda driver. The reason Sousuke can use the LD without that drug is most likely that it is a different kind of LD.
-

But in conclusion, there is no evidence what so ever in the officially translated english material(excepting the official subtitles, which I haven't been able to check) that you can become any kind of whispered, if you're not born a whispered...

Also, I don't believe this is an off topic discussion - my theory on how the whispered interact with eachother would explain how the access to the black technology rises in the minds of the whispered - yet it would be going against my theory if you had turned out to be correct on this one, thusly it was necessary to settle this.
Is it just me, or are there way too many talking decapitated heads around these days?

Hello, I'm new here, and glad to meet you guys!

Sorry to bust must of you people's bubbles, but I have read the novels (official Koeran Translations) and have preety much most of the answer. (As to Volume 13)
[ecs]
1. Takuma is NOT a Whispered. Rather, he has been given drugs to have his brain produce special waves (gamma waves if I am not mistaken). The thing about the brain waves is told in the episode of the Hong Kong crisis.

2. The special thing about the Whispered is that they have the ability to connect to the Omnisphere, a mysterious dimension. This dimension can also be achieved through a special machine (something similar to the one in the TDD's Lady Chapel) The Omnisphere is where the Whispers come from, and also where Whispered people can share thoughts.

This is my relpy for now. Have a nice day people!

Hullo and welcome.

Vol 13 :-o /me is envious 'We' did know about #1 But gamma waves aren't that special, your brain, without that drug already is a neat gamma wave emitter. :)

About #2 any info about the origin of it ?

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

That is interesting.

#1 would seem to be in conflict with what is revealed in the manga, but then again, japanese litterature is known to be in conflict with itself from time to time, so...

On the other hand, it fits perfectly with what I was able to extract from the anime. I suppose the mangaka just took a few additional liberties.

#2 fits perfectly with what I've speculated so far, so I'm not surprised...

This new set of information is quite a revelation. This information is kind of strange and weird, not because I doubt its reliability, but it now flips how I think about Whispereds now upside down. Not a bad thing, just need to adapt to new intelligence. Incredible, there's more to the Full Metal Panic! universe than I can imagine, unless I somehow understand the Japanese language and culture perfectly, then I can buy the novels myself.

Does that mean that the Full Metal Panic! novels are translated and distributed in Korea fullmetaljin?

Yes. currently in Korea, we have up to volume 13 in translation (although they are NOT in the same order as the Japanese version), and also have monthly translations which are about two months behind from Dragon. A problem with the timing as prevented the publishing of book 14 and 15.....

I wish they would translate the novels into English! I'm so jealous!
To quote my six-year-old the first time he saw Fumoffu - "Wow! A giant hamster with a machine gun! Super cool!"

So Korea and Japan are the only countries with official Full Metal Panic! novels? Thanks for the information fullmetaljin.
