FMP! naming conventions and other questions

Post by Keops »

Hello everyone.

My name is Ricardo "Keops" Chirino, I'm an anime fan from Venezuela and I'm new here. I hope we all become good friends here. I recently had the chance to get the Full Metal Panic! anime series (fansub) and I really liked it.

The purpose of this post is that I'm working on a Full Metal Panic! website in spanish, since I haven't found even one decent FMP! page in spanish. I'm aiming more for the information-oriented page rather than the flashy graphical page, and I need some info (so that I'm sure the information within the website will be correct). Well, here are the questions:

1) Is there an official writing for the name of the series? I've seen it written in several different ways, including Full Metal Panic! (the most common, perhaps the official one), Fullmetal Panic!, Fullmetal Panic and FullMetal Panic! (NOTE: using the katakana from the logo as a quick reference you may believe that the official name would be "Fullmetal Panic!")

2) What is Kaname Chidori's family name? I have a confusion with this name and I don't know why. I suppose Kaname is her first name, but Chidori sounds like a first name. Help me here please.

3) Are the mechs called Arm Slaves or Armor Slaves? In episode number 1 (Kininaru Aitsu Ha Gunsou) we see that the title's of the magazines Shinji have say Arm Slave, yet many people and fansubbers use the name Armor Slaves. So, if the official name is Armor Slave, could this be considered a mistake?

4) How do you spell Tuatha De Dannan? I've seen Tuatha De Dannan and Tuatha De Danann anf even Tuatha De Danaan. This makes my head ache.

5) Finally, this one isn't FMP! related at all, but has more to do with the hosting for my FMP! webpage. Do you know any good (with this I mean: decent storage capacity, little to no ads/pop-ups, good reliability) free webhosting servers? Or maybe you are a benevolent soul willing to spare me some MBs for the page? As it's designed to be fast and content- oriented, it would be very light on the bandwidth.

Well, thanks a lot for your time and I'm looking forward for your help and comments!

PS: Congratulations for this awesome website. In fact, this page inspired me to create my website (along with the fact that no useful spanish FMP! websites exist). Thanks for the great work!

Welcome Keops! wow, somebody from Venezuela! X3

I'll answer a few that i'm pretty sure of:

2. Chidori = first name Kaname = 2nd name. Jap names use their surname first.

5. Hm... hosting.. try DigitalRice.com (I think they don't have a banner) or geocities = 5MB, lil banner. Or.. tripod = 20MB, popup banner.

Here are a few answers.

1. If you translate litterally, it would end up as "FullMetal*Panic!". If you translate considering proper English usage, it would be "Full Metal Panic!". In any case, I am yet to see an official version.

2.Like Sagara said, the Japanese use their first name first. Same with the Chinese. For example, my Chinese name is Goh Kim Swie. Goh is my Family.

3.It really doesn't matter, as both are accepted, considering the kana, it's pretty hard to make out which one the author meant. In any case, they are normally reffered to as "AS".

4.It says Tuatha de Dannan on my book on Celtic folklore. The others are acceptable as well.

5.Free, reliable and ad-free do not mix, I'm sorry to say.

Note: To correct Sagara, Geocities has 15mb. It's better than Tripod IMO, considering the ad is pretty small, and doesn't pester you too much.

[14:57] Silver Lynxy: Oh right. You're one of those Trillian people, aren't you?
[14:58] Katyusha [Love Through Superior Firepower]: trillian people? =.= What are we, an ethnicity now?

Hi, welcome, and thanks for the comments on my site :)

Kat's answers are pretty much it- just to expand on a few...

I believe ADV will be using 'Full Metal Panic!'. Maybe without the '!'.
The japanese manga used romanized 'Fullmetal Panic!' but that's stylized, and not an accurate use of english. I think you could find mutiple ways of writing it in other japanese materials too, not just that way.

FMP uses real-world naming style. Japanese people have their names listed eastern style (family name first) while Western people's names are given name first. So Chidori and Sagara are family names.

On the Tuatha- it's a myth reference and mutiple spellings are accurate.
In the anime it's been romanized as Tuatha de Danaan -ep 18-, but I'm not sure if the novel references match up.

I suggest that on your site, choose one spelling to use, but to at least make a note that other spellings are common and accurate too.
And very much good luck with it! When you have it up, let me know and I'd love to link to it :)

Hello.

Hmmm... I don't get it. Sorry to ask but, what's the bid deal with this BBQ? Maybe it's something that happened in these boards before I joined?
