Which is the first name and which is the last name ???

Ok with Kaname Chidodi and Sousuke Sagara .... How do I tell the difference between the first and last names ? because in the show it seems like everybody calls them different ones the whole time ... sometimes Sousuke Sagara calls Kaname, Kaname and sometimes he calls her Chidori .... so how do you know the difference ??? and why would they call each other by there last names anyway ?

It's a tad confusing in this show, because all chara names are listed according to where they are from. IE< most of the characters names are listed western style. But the japanese characters are listed eastern style.

Like others said, it's most common to call a classmate or someone with whom you have only a casual relationship (by curcumstance) by their family name. Kaname called Sousuke 'Sagara' in the beginning of the anime, but after ep 7, she starts to call him 'Sousuke' showing she feels comfortable with him to call him by his first.

However Sousuke is very formal and always calls everyone else by their family names (or rank)- the only exception I can currently think of is Kurtz.

i thought chidori was her first name. hmm, that's the result of watching a 24 ep anime in one sitting. guess i will have to rewatch at a slower pace.

Well, watching the ADV subtitled version, the waters are muddied even more. Kaname is referred to orally as Chidori Kaname, yet it is translated as Kaname Chidori in the subtitles. What gives it away that Kaname is her personal name is when Kyouko calls her Kana-chan, an affectionate form of her name, in my opinion.

Its common for a subtitled film to reverse the family and given names in the English language version. When I went back to Hungary a few years ago (well, quite a few years ago) I took my cousin to see a subtitled version of Star Wars: A New Hope Special Edition. Where you would hear Luke Skywalker, you saw Skywalker Luke in the Hungarian sub.

Problem is consitancy, which I noticed in the ADV dub of FMP isn't kept. ADV swapped 'Kaname' and 'Chidori' in several of Souske's dialoges, which made the 'I say your name, you say my name' scene have less of an impact. That has always been a problem with ADV's work. They need to hire a continuity director.

first of all if u watched more than one anime seires then u would know that they do it all the time so u have to get used to it. Some people call them diffrent things out of respect and disrespect.

Ho ho ho....

First of all, We do watch more than one series as we are all Anime lovers, so that comment is utterly irrelevent.

In most cases the name switching is benign since its not oooh sooo important to the plot. However, in the case of FMP it took ALOT out of the impact of the scene. In anycase, I only watch dubs on Anime Network. I've been sticking more to the subs since I use them as a learning tool as well as entertainment. That also goes for some of the subbed dramas my co-worker loans me. However, musch to my dismay, she tends to have more of the 'soap operas'. My wife likes those. Funny. no matter how different a society is, as soon as it gets a taste of American culture they immediately pick up on 2 things: McDonalds and soap operas. Maybe we should add Starbucks to that list?

But I digress........ when I should egress....

Sometime you just have to laugh.

Well in japanese last name comes before first name so in case on Chidori Kaname, Chidori is last name (she is called some times miss Chidori) and Kaname is first name when Sousuke's last name is Sagara.

As so it is in Hungary where I'm from, as well as most other countries in Europe.

Even in the English language you are suppose to address a non-familiar in a formal fashion by refering to them by thier family (last) name or by "Sir", "Madam"/"Mrs" or "Miss" if you donot know thier name. This formal speech was also used by children to address thier fathers as "Sir" in the 1800's. But in the past 100 or so years such use has been diminished and you only come accross it in more formal settings lke upscale restaurants and shops.

Back to the topic...

The confusion comes more from the inconsitancy in alot of English language dubs where they flip flop between usage even between the same characters with no rhyme or reason. (Never mind the Robotech Syndrom of completely basterdization)

If they either:
a) stick to the original usage of names, and notate the cultural difference and significance in a liner note.
b) stick to English standards.

I'd prefer A, since the original pattern is used to show how characters grow emotionally closer (or farther) apart through the story. The key however is just consistancy.

...I'd settle for the subtitles to have it the way it was in the original Japanese
dialogue, with the dubs using the accepted English way just for those who
'do listen to' dubs. Peeves me off when my intelligence -- and those others
who do understand this cultural difference -- is insulted that way
