She's Great!!!!
She's survived what is surely a highly traumatic event in her childhood (the loss of her mother) and emerged, most likely, stronger after the greiving.
She forges ahead even if she's frightened.
She doesn't let herself be intimidated by situations that threaten her own person or safety. Usually it seems to be quiet contrary. She backed down only to threats to her teacher's life, or to others. But otherwise, she's rather flippant when staring down the barrel of a gun herself. It's easier to have bravado when your own life isn't at stake.
She's willing to give of her time and effort to help certain Military man
pass Japanese Classics, or feed him something other than Rations, and basically guide him through an unfamiliar, non-threatening environment that he was never equipped to handle. *siiiigh, I feel like such a girlie girl now. I should be in a field of flowers... littered with shrapnel*She's also unflinching in her duty
to educate and correct the aforementioned military man in the most efficient manner available 
-short of her throwing on the uniform of a higher ranking officer that is. I suspect the missing mother figure in her life would have curbed at least a little of the abuse she throws at Sousuke. By all means not most of it, but surely some of it. Maybe she wouldn't try to hail a taxi with him...She's independent and self sufficient (sort of) at an age when an "average" character is still living with their families and being a "fool hardy/ happy go-lucky" teenager.
She's able to fend off lechers
without breaking a sweat. And cut their egos down, pretty well anyway, with the best of them 
Really the only thing that does seem to shake her is her Whispered abilities. I suspect that is more due to a lack of control over the one thing everyone has mastery of-her own mind
