Thats a big issue here in the city. The water main system is 200 years old and with all the vehicle traffic between the cars, trucks, subways etc., the vibraions cause the undergound cast iron and morter/brick mains to break. They wind up going unnoticed until something like that happens if thy're not a major main or if the leak is relatively small.
