How in the world do you control armslaves
Ok from what I've seen in the FMP series (all 3.) the arms are controlled by animatronics with joysticks for hands, sure ok that works. But what about the legs. In the production sketches, the M9 cockpit seems to work by pedals, but how do you control crouching or turning or jumping flipping etc... (ok I get jumping). But with Garuon's mech (venom) it uses an animatronic boot of sorts, when he moves his leg, the mech moves its leg. So which is it? I would think it to be animatronics, as it is much easier to control the limbs than pedals (faster, and less to worry about).
What do you guys think?

Actually the military has been researching thought-control systems for some
time now -- there's nothing majorly technical about wiring up electrodes to
'read' brain impulses and translate them into motions by motors, gyros, etc.
Back in the 80s I think there was some research into a thought-controlled
wheelchair for para and quadraplegics... there's also a techno-thriller novel
Firefox about a Soviet superplane with thought-guided weaponary.
That's my guess for the most likely candidate

On a good day, a Tomahawk can fly into the door of a two-car garage at the distance of several hundred miles. And that can ruin your whole day.

gah.... HF had to mention that god awful excuse for a waste of 2 hrs....
It could also be that different models have different control systems.
After all, Mao did mention that the older genertion unit that Tessa used in her bout was easier to control than the M9.

Okay lets go to the FMP Anime:
If you saw the Trailer for TSR, the head is controled by the head of the Pilot, like the Apache Helicopters.
The legs seem to be controlled by pedals, the same as a Aircraft Pedals. there's 6 movements to it. The Pedal itself (Steping on the pedal, It might be even a double pedal{a Heel and Toe}) and you can push the Pedal forward or Back (maybe even sideways?).
The arms seems to be controlled by a double arm control. The Arm guard is inflated (There's probably sensors in their that Check pressure to see where the arm is moving) and there is controls on the sticks.
There might be a Presure sensor in the back part of the seat to see where the body is supposed to be facing. (So if you put pressure one side of your back it would turn the waist of the AS)
I might have seen a button for the Thumb and the index finger. (Maybe the whole hand)
And if I can remember corectly some of the other controls are voice activated.
Lamda driver... If you seen the whole series you should know by now what controls it
What else are we missing here

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

What about the suits they wear on missions? Perhaps they, particularly the helmet help with the "thought control" side of things. Are the AS less effective when they're forced to not have their suits?
I can see that as being particularily true for the Arbalest and the lambda driver since it operates on the pilot's thoughts and emotions. When the lambda driver failed on Sousuke, was he wearing the suit and helmet, or not?

I thought the inflatable padding was just to keep the arms/legs stable and so they don't hit the sides of the braces...
Ok well I've setteled on a system for my story. The arms/upper body uses animatronics, (you move your arm the mech moves its arm) however instead being 1:1 ratio, the senvitity is increased so moving it 20 degrees will cause the mechs arm to move 90 degrees etc... For the lower body, I will go with the 6 way pedals.
But I would still like to continue on this conversation

@Killer
Euh, it took me considerably longer to read the novel that two hours dude
@PookaKitten
I had thought the suit might be something to do with the control, but there's
two times I can think of off the top of my head where Sagara wasn't wearing
the suit to control the AS: In Khanka and in HK.
...then again, the Arbalest may rely on a completely different interface method
@Ender
Write whatever tickles your fancy... YOU'RE the author Word of warning...
if you get too tied up in details, don't know a whit of how it works, and try
and guesstimate how it does, the result(s) generally aren't pretty.
Another alternative to mental control is (magnetic) sensors in the helmet/suit.
Helmet cueing system for high-offboresight missiles use this to 'know'
where to point the missiles' seeker heads in relation to where the pilot
is looking.

Well in reality the question is,would they satnd on theri feet?I mean..theyd be incredibly unstable and certinly would not be able to run,much less jump.
Howewer this is anime,so it looks cool(VERY!)
But in realitty id imagine something much smaller,maybe an APC like the one in Matrix,but with more protection for the driverand more firepower.controled by a combination of anamatronics or even better,mind controll(the US military made a prototype for controling a jet dome years ago).
Maybe therir already in use in an alternate universe,such as the one of FMP

the pilots arn't standing. They sit on thier butts, but the legs and are can move around freely.

In that case I differ to the fact that we, as bipeds, can run and jump and are very stable. The stability comes from a feedback system to control self balance. We have such a system in our ears. Machines can use a gyro system to do the same, and couple that with a high-speed pnumatic/hydrolic actuators. You'll need a very powerful computer system to run it, but it is possible.
The benefits of a biped system is the go-anywhere ability.

i think
it's basically kinda like gundam seed pilotting with a lil g-gundam in the mix.
you can't pilot an as that long because it wears u down so i am assuming it's pretty damn stressful on the body.
and it looks like u use thoughts to control it as well because they are definately not enough things to move em.
if it only was like a first person shooter.... lol
