Actually, we've been slacking off with this section for so many years, we're waaaaay behind schedule as far as the mecha weapons go.
The gatling gun used is your standard, average everday multi-barreled rotary cannon, that just spins the barrels around as part of the reload cycle to catch the rounds from the magazine and fire them off. It was invented by some guy named Gatling in the mid 19th century, and operated by a handcrank.
The one used (and all modern gatlings) operate on the same principle, except they use an electric motor instead of a handcrank. Average rate of fire for those things is 1000-5000 rounds/minute, depending on which model used exactly. The shadow used a generic AS-sized gatling gun. Someone else more expert in shotguns will come along later.
But basically the AS just used enlarged versions of real weapons.

Remember kids, trying to start Armageddon is dangerous. Do not try it at home.
[14:57] Silver Lynxy: Ack. You couldn't see that?
[14:57] Katyusha [Love Through Superior Firepower]: Nope, cant see a thing.
[14:57] Katyusha [Love Through Superior Firepower]: Not using MSN remember?
[14:57] Silver Lynxy: Oh right. You're one of those Trillian people, aren't you?
[14:58] Katyusha [Love Through Superior Firepower]: trillian people? =.= What are we, an ethnicity now?
[15:00] Silver Lynxy: Yes. An evil race.

I have gone into my Super Robot Taisen J game for the GBA, and taken some screenshots of the M9 and ARX-7 attacks. These are fairly accurate, but may not completely match the novels. I will translate the names as closely as I can. A lot of the guns will be called "cannon" because that's what the name says and it literally is a cannon by human gun standards.
And please, if anybody wants to identify these with the closest real word counterparts, by all means go ahead.
This is Kurz Weber's M9 Gernsback. The difference from Melissa's M9 is that it is missing the close range melee attack, which fits Kurz's crappy sense of close combat, and his role as team sniper.
1.
Chain Gun
These are the standard fixed armaments in the M9, similar to the Vulcan rotary cannons so often seen in fighter planes. It doesn't say so in the screenshot, but there is one on each side of the head. Possibly the actual Vulcan, or the Phalanx or something.
2.
40mm Assault Rifle
The one mentioned earlier. Somebody said it looks like a scaled up G3. I'm not really sure about that, but it's shorter.
3.
57mm Sniper Cannon
Kurz's sniper rifle that we see so often. It looks like a Barrett to me, but I have little knowledge in sniper rifles.
4.
Not a canon weapon, so I won't bother. This was included in the game to give the M9s an attack that could actually scratch the bigger enemies. It consists of a fold-out sniper rifle that shoots out some explosive black blast.
More coming in a few minutes.[/b]

Okay, so this is Melissa Mao's M9 Gernsback. I know that it has an antennae thing for jamming communications, but that doesn't matter here. It has all the standard armaments.
1.
Chain Gun
On both sides of head. It's like the rotary cannons they put in fighter planes.
2.
Monomolecular Cutter combo version
A standard combat knife used for close combat and cutting open airliners to get to the explosive goodness inside. As its name suggests, it is probably sharp enough to get through the armor plating of enemy ASes. The green "C" is for "Combo", which means it can attack multiple adjacent enemies in the game.
3.
40mm Assault Rifle
Standard assault rifle used by Mithril M9s.
4.
Monomolecular Cutter
Just mentioned this.
5.
This is that weird sniper rifle thingy that isn't worth mentioning.

And finally... the ARX-7 Arbalest!
This is Sagara Sousuke's AS. It's equipped with the Lambda Driver for maximum slaughter and survivability, although this is of no importance here. In the game, when the unit's morale is a certain amount, the LD will activate, giving you a defensive barrier and nice offensive bonuses. I will describe what it looks like in the game.
1.
Chain Gun
Vulcan-like thing on both sides of head, similar to jet fighters, yadda yadda. When Lambda Drive is active, the little bullets become bigger and glowier.
2.
Monomolecular Cutter combo version
Super sharp combat knife. I also want to note that in the canon, the Arbalest is also equipped with another anti-tank dagger. I forget where this is stored. Sometimes I see it in the "mouth".
3.
Assault Rifle
For some reason they got lazy and left out "40mm." It's the same thing. The bullets become all shiny and beamish with the Lambda Driver on.
4.
Monomolecular Cutter
Forgot to talk about what happens with the Lambda Driver on: the knife drops out of Arbalest's "mouth", and he pulls another knife out from somewhere else. Then he hacks and stabs the bejeezus out of the enemy robot.
5.
57mm Shot Cannon "Boxer"
A mech-sized pump-action shotgun. Somebody says it looks like a SPAS-12, and I disagree. With the Lambda Driver on, the pellet spread literally becomes beam spread, and all flashy as well. I also observed that while shells are ejected from the shotgun with the normal attack, there are no shells coming out of the gun with LD. So I can theorize that with the Lambda Driver on, Sousuke has infinite ammo that punches through everything except Leonard's crazy AS. Oops, spoiler.
I hoped this helped.
