Question to Sj, are the chapters in furigana? Not that it matters if it isn't n.n; I just need to stop being lazy and utilize my dictionary once I can get my hand on the magazine and chapters n.n;

Most of it is not in furigana (definitely less than half). I would say that a good grasp of kanji or a lot of patience with a dictionary is needed to read it.

No problem there =D. I've been doing that with my copies of Kimi wa petto and it wasn't as bad looking them up as I thought it would be, so long as you have a good grasp of how strokes are and all that. But thanks for your answer!

Well, I know that in the series translation by ADV, they translated makkaren-taii as "Lieutenant McAllen" (I had translated it as Captain, myself).

*shrugs* ADV's kinda... spotty. Personally, I felt that groundforces ranks for the PRT/SRT and Kalinin would be better than Navy, but eh. If you translate Sousuke and Kurz as being Sergeants, and Mao as a Sgt. Major, then you might as well go all the way, or make them Chief Petty Officers and Mao a Master Chief.

Basically, the Sergeant Major is THE senoir enlisted man (or woman) on the ship. Mao wouldn't be the only E9 there though - TDD-1's naval crew would probably have a Master Chief as the Chief of Boat... but those are different branches. The Sergeant Major basically keeps an eye out for the enlisteds' welfare and sorta acts as a buffer between them and the officers.

New magazine arrived, short summary for those interested:

Starting out with Sousuke- after the assasination attempt on Sousuke's life just after he regained consciousness, we find they are all now in the sunny state of Florida, where Sousuke is getting a quick lesson in rehab from a foul-mouthed old navy man, John George Courtney (I believe), who likes to precede everything he says with the f-word. When Lemon protests to the harsh workout that Sousuke's undergoing, Courtney orders one of the other men to punch Sousuke a few times. Woot?
Then on to Kaname, who has basically been numb for months living in a seaside mansion. Leonard hasn't tried anything inappropriate with her, or anything at all, actually- he just kind of treasures her like a "rare gem"...weirdo, imo. That and she's worked on stuff for them- unfortunately, in all the information that they have given her about the various ASes- Behemoths, Codarls, etc- they never give her the information about the Belial. Then, walking along one day, she overhears two of Leonard's subordinates talking about a failed assassination attempt, why it was ordered in the first place, the missing remains of the ARX unit, etc...she puts this information all together and realizes that Sousuke's still looking for her. Then she realizes that she is mad at herself for doing nothing, letting herself fall into a rut. She wants Sousuke to stop looking for her, to look for someone else. Then she thinks "Hurry and come. Come and say those words, "No problem"." Then she walks by a pool, and gets in it and starts to swim. There's a parallel here between her and Sousuke, both of them thinking "go forward, go forward, go forward."

Well, finally Kaname seems to have come back to her senses- didn't seem right, her all in the damsel in distress role. Anyway, that's it until next month.

Yup, cliche- especially the old sailor- although I cracked up at the following:

Courtney and Lemon are talking about Sousuke, and mentions that Sousuke has "f**king guts", and Lemon replies, "Guts, huh?" and the old guy says, "No, f**king guts." Lemon asks, "There's a difference?" and the old guy replies with, "What, you don't understand? If not, then you're a f**king idiot! Well, for a stinkin' f**king french bastard, just being able to speak f**king english, there's still hope!"

I was laughing quite a bit.

Teletha Testarossa is going off to a uneasy meeting with the leaders of Mithril. Sousuke was appointed by Teletha to be her bodyguard. Seeing that it would be an honor to meet such great men of military warfare, he accepts. However, his images of them being men above the clouds are smashed to bits when he finds that they are nothing more than Yankee old geezers who sexually harass "Tessa-tan" as if it were a complimentary thing to do to women (they were born and raised in that era).

Sousuke's image of these old geezers using examples of people he works with:

Former US Navy Fleet Admiral Jerome Border - An aloha shirt wearing who guffaws annoyingly

Former US Navy Vice Admiral Kevin Skyray - "Tessa-tan, would you want to experience a dangerous love affair with me?" (age Kurtz Weber 50+ years and you'll get him)

(Emphasis added:) Former US Marine Corps Lt. Colonel J.G. Courtney - A man who cusses and swears excessively and uses the word "f***" and "f***ing" as an adjective to everything (Mao becomes like this when she's drunk)

Former US Navy Captain Roy Seals - "Te...Tessa-tan, [breathes heavily] Care to join me for a stroll? [breathes heavily]" (If Major Kalinin was a lecher, you get him)

Former US Navy Rear Admiral Thomas Ross - "Tessa-tan! Here! You've gotta look at the tatoo I have engraved on my butt!!" (If Commander Mardukas went insane, you get him)


Memorable quotes:
Tessa: "When I first met them, I thought it would be an honor to meet such war veterans. I had no idea that they were just a bunch of Yankee old geezers."
Sousuke: "But ma'am, you are an American too"
Tessa: "I'm from the traditional and strict upper East Coast! Don't you dare associate me with those West Coast idiots whose brains have palm trees sticking out of them!"

(Note: this sidestory is from one of the short story collections.)

As for developments in the latest chapter... yep, things are shaping up for a good old-fashioned Hollywood showdown. But if it stays true to tradition, and the (right) guy gets the girl in the end, I don't mind one bit.
