It's a information based world, being unable to communicate via cyberbrain or access data, means to be unable to function in a society that has become dependent on being connected.
Actually people without cyberbrains are considered handicapped.

The unique waves a cyber brainemits is used to establish your identity and used for payments in stores etc., while paper media still exists most is printed in compressed code and is deciphered on the fly by a cyber brain.

Usually it's not so easy to ghosthack a cyberbrain unless you are a skilled hacker. But it's possible to download somthing into your cyberbrain that will mess you up ... thoughts, memories, feelings and sensory information can be shared with others.

At the start it was a recommended way to communicate but everybody knew that recommended very quickly became required.

BANDAI ENTERTAINMENT WARNS FANSUBBERS AGAINST ILLEGAL FANSUBS OF GHOST IN THE SHELL: SOLID STATE SOCIETY

August 22, 2006 (Cypress, CA) Bandai Entertainment Inc. sent out a general notice to the fan community today stating it would be carefully monitoring the market for the creation and/or distribution of illegal fansubs or other pirated copies of all Bandai Entertainment Inc. titles, including the yet to be released title, Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society.

Several fansub sites have publicly announced plans to create and distribute illegal fansubs of Solid State Society following its release in Japan. However, Bandai Entertainment Inc. and Manga Entertainment have secured the exclusive right to distribute this title in the US. The creation of translated versions of Solid State Society is considered an unauthorized derivative and constitutes infringement of the intellectual property rights in the work as well as unfair competition. Furthermore, uploading and downloading of the programs without an official license or explicit consent by the content owner(s) constitutes infringement of copyright, trademark and other intellectual property rights, and is an illegal act. Bandai must take steps to protect its investment in the property and will take all measures available to stop the illegal distribution of its titles, including instituting court proceedings. If it is forced to do so, Bandai is prepared to seek statutory damages and/or damages to cover its loss of sales.

“Fansubs, even those not sold for profit, are harmful to our properties and industry overall and we will be watching closely to make sure our rights regarding SSS are not infringed,” said Ken Iyadomi, President of Bandai Entertainment Inc. “We are prepared to take legal action against fansubbers and illegal download and other distribution sites if this notice is ignored,” he added.

Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society will be released by Bandai Entertainment Inc. in 2007.

When will they learn?

I will buy the DVD anyway but I dislike the way Bandai is playing this. If they make it a worldwide release, I don't have the need to watch the fansub first to get a early fix. Time for apple to release anime on iTunes

...you know you spend more on lawyers than speeding up the release date when...

Bandai's pretty much fallen off the map when it comes to new releases of stuff...
sure they got their bread and butter SEED and SEED Destiny, but everything
else with their parent company's name on it is nowhere to be found.

The story was complicated and having a .srt that was translated from japanese => chinese => engrish => english didn't really help.

But it made more sense to me than just watching the raw.

But I have one minor gripe.... it's still missing that "action trance track"

I'm considering buying the Darkhorse manga TPBs.
I've read the 4 Appleseed books sofar, and they impressed me more than the '04 movie, so I'm willing to give the GitS manga a chance.

My comicbook retailer also has some Shirow poster art books, which look enticing, though borderlining on erotic art.
I'm doubting to pick them up as well, but the hefty price tag is an obstacle.

SSS is defenetly something to wait for. I have seen first GitS movie and first season of SAC so least I'm defenetly waiting this new one.

You should watch the Second Gig. first ... while not entirely needed it makes some of the items clear.
