Yea, banning sales of firearms will not be enough. The gov will need to go much farther like making it illegal to own and offer money to buy the guns back. And send cops out to get the rest.

Everything will need to be regulated and confiscated; guns, ammunition, gunpowder. It's probably too hard to get it all, so we should just give up and let people buy more guns? That's like saying we can't stop all the cocaine from coming into the U.S. so we should just let the druggies die and rob other people for drug money. Or there's too many meth labs so it won't help if we move Sudafed to behind the counter (well, bad example cuz Sudafed has great benifits). Or global warming is inevitable and we should just live it up and burn as many gallons of oil as possible before we're royally screwed.

Guns need to be illegal to own, not just to buy. I wouldn't want to be the cop that pulls up to a trailer home to take some hick's shotgun away from him cuz the law said so... that's suicide. If right to own is voided today and all gun ownership is illegal, the mentality will still be there and you'll have shootouts and police sieges everywhere. Maybe it'll help if gun sale is banned first and 50 years later, the mentality will be different. I hope I don't get shot before then.

You don't need guns for self defense. There are other easy to use defensive weapons like pepper spray and tasers. You'll never hear about a crazy guy killing 33 people with a taser...

one should never give up ;)

All I said was that making gun ownership illegal won't change anything. Law obiding citizens will be the only ones without guns, but isn't that the majority case now? Not everyone that can buy a gun has a gun. Ultimately, You will still have the problem of a nut job getting hold of something to kill people with. There are still murders here in NY, they're not just commited with guns but also commited with knives.... Let bans those too. Oh and what about cars? There are just as many deaths caused by aggressive driving as homocides. Would we then make ownership of cars illegal because we can't allow some mentally deranged person get thier hands on one and run 1, 10, 40, 100 people over?

These are just knee-jerk reactions to an event with people on either side of the fence not willing to come to some intellegent compromise. That is the problem in America that stems from extream individualism, which is getting worse with each passing generation.

Actually, I take some of that back. Here's something that was done right, in NY state at least (since that is where I live).

Cigarettes...

You can legally acquire them starting on your 18th b-day.

However,

We ban them in certain places....
We drive the price up of tobacco by taxation....
We force tobacco companies to pay annual "reperations', which also drives up the price....
We allowed tobacco companies to be sued for bad advertisement....
We embarked on a anti-marketting campaign....
We punish stores that sell to minors....
Online sales have fallen under scrutiny (importing tobacco into NY without a proper liscence is illegal, that includes internet sales)...

And guess what? the number of smokers have gone down, and more and more people are quitting. (My Wife, her Mom, and her Dad have quite smoking. As well as others in her family.)

This had an effect. Why can't the same be done for weapons (not just guns) and ammo?

:?

You make the borders tougher to get weapons through, embark on more illegal sales sting operations, Make em more expensive and difficult to buy legally. Hold stores and manufaturers accountable... Advertising.. can't forget advertising.

Then we can talk about making them illegal. But so far not even an attempt is made.... :/

Even though weapons are not "addictive" like cigarettes (alothough in some cases I can disagree with that), we still should treat it as such.

Instead of debating whether firearm laws could decrease crime (a debate that goes in cirles since no-one is willing to change there opinion) take a moment to think about this.

If one of the students had a weapon for self defence purposes that psychotic maniac could have been dead before he had carryed out his disturbing plan.

Seriously though i dont know why i even mention it, because someone with an opposite view and a good point will completly counter my arguement with their own "logic"

Some good news for the pro-ban folk, Im pretty sure that a democrat is gonna be voted commander and chief and when that happens we can all kiss our guns goodbye

Old topic, jeah, but I want to write some of my thoughts about owing guns.

When it is common to have a gun in a household, it makes easier to shoot people. Not only because people have something to shoot whith, but because it is more common to meet a mean guy whit a gun. So shooting gets easier... I mean, why to shoot man who doesn't have a gun and who just broke in your house to steal some money (life>money), but if you have a reason to thinkt that he has one, fear of getting killed may make you shoot. Also if that guy didn't happen to have a gun.

Also, it is very important to feel that you are safe. This may be a thing that varies for person to person, but I feel much more safe when a law about firearms is pretty tight. After all, firearms are not only things whit you can protect yourself, and I prefer to be in a fight without arms than whith them, because it is a bit more diffucult to get killed.

Not to mention possibility to cause an accident.

In thouse countries that hava a loose law about firearms, making them forbit won't help much right away. Old guns would still be around, keeping prize relativly low. But a gun does't last forever, and after some time guns will be more and more uncommon, and (illegal ones) will be less cheap.

Personally I don't think that making firearms completly illegal is needed. They may have many good purposes - like hunting and shooting as a hobby - but control must be tight.
(English is not my native language, so my writings are pretty crappy. Try to live with it.)
