Just got another harsh lesson in the old saying "He who backs up Laughs."
My 16GB flash drive just packed it in: Windows says 'Device unrecognized' (no Duh!),
Linux says 'no USB device plugged in' (no Double Duh!), USB protocol analyzer sits
with a blank face (no Triple Duh!)... and that's the last couple of years' worth of
work and personal files I've been accumulating but haven't bothered to backup 'cuz
flash drives are next to indestructable, right?

I mean, they're wrapped in Titanium and Aluminum, and are rated for 'Everyday'
(read butterfingers and forget-me-always).. heck, this one came with a lifetime
warranty (my flippin' arse!!!)

So I' looking at about $1800 for some outfit to physically dismantle this sucker
and see if they can't retrieve anything from the flash chip itself... which'll basically
void the warranty (ya think...) and I'll be looking for ANOTHER trusted storage
space (maybe MEO will be good) for all my data.

...and probably avoid OCZ flash drives for the rest of my life (you were waiting for that, weren't you)

They're not. AAMOF, the flash chip wear out rather quickly if you write/delete to them a lot.

Translated means 'all things break down,' but I still don't think my usage patterns qualified this thing to just up and quit (less than 7 months usage and NOT as a ReadyBoost device)
Methinks it may be time to go back to Kingston for the next time around...

Well actually ... If I actually find the time to pull off that bloody upgrade I have been procrastinating, thing would have looked differently.

Wow... a scheduled powerdown that for once DIDN'T break any gear while it happened.
