New Trek Movie (personal review / comments)

I've always been a firm believer in the old saying "try it first before you knock it."
And when news of a new Star Trek came out I was on the side of Trek fans that thought
it was the wrong project at the wrong time

Well, after seeing the new Trek Movie (twice in one night I might add), here are my thoughts:

What I Liked:
=========

- Action, bar none. From people kicking the s*t out of each other to big ships duking it
out in space, I wasn't left wanting... other than MORE!!

- Script, yes, there was a script and it was rather well thought out. All
the major chars got to put forward their character, and a few nods to previous series
was put in, but not in the sense of "oh, we need this here to make it feel like we
give a damn."

- Leonard Nimoy, as it gave the movie some grounding, and as much as I hate to put it,
gave the movie some legitamacy as a real attempt as a "prequel" than another case of
Hollywood dusting off an old property, butchering it to s*t and putting it out in the
windowsill while it rakes in the cash.

- Deep Space Fender Benders... AGAIN!! That's it, next time someone else drives!

What I Didn't Like:
============

- First off, I'm the kind of Trek fan that eats factoids about the Trek Universe
two meals a day, so I'll spare everyone the laundry list of screwups in continuity and
"that's not the way <insert here> is supposed to go"

- Sarek / Amanda... yes, Mark Lenard is dead and there have been three Mrs Sareks in the
Star Trek Universe, but... Winoa Ryder?

- Kirk's third attempt at the Kobayashi Maru test being treated as little
more than a glorified video game where no one dies. Please... look at
the beginning of ST2 for how to do it, complete with smoke and explosions.

- Time Travel... AGAIN, Mildred? Seriously...

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Moments:

- Uhura... in a bra and panties? -or- Uhura, and... [ecs]Spock[/ecs]

- Spock being brief in an explanation for once? So brief the only way to convey it is via mindmeld?

- First there was the Genesis Project, then Species 8472 planet buster... guess what they
come up with to end the planet Earth as we know it this time?

To sum it up, I think the movie's best summaried by the immortal lines "Space, the final
frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. It's continuing mission,
to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life, and new civilizations. To boldy
go where no one has gone before." Besides, the second time around I found it was alittle
easier to turn off the part of my brain responsible for nitpicking the trivia / tidbits / backstory

... but you know what that means, right? We'll have to rewrite the history AGAIN!

Will read this tomorrow will be watching it first.

And thus I watched and I couldn't help but wondering why the engine room looked like a brewery.
Still fun to watch if you turn off your sci-fi tech brain.
This new cast works for me.... The ship looked crap imho but at least they didn't blow it up.

So to boldly make more movies and squeeze more money out of it than no one before.

Major fudgie for me would be:
Red matter??? Why bing such a huuuuge orb with ya?? It's not logical.

Having been a Trek fans since the 1960s, I was skeptical about how this would be done.

I have to say I really liked this latest outing. I thought they did a nice job of balancing homage to the original series and coming up with ways to strike out on their own. True, if the make many more films from this rebooted version, all my hard-earned Trek trivia will become seriously devalued.

Nimoy's presence was really an anchor for the film. It is a shame Shatner didn't get some kind of cameo or something, but maybe next time.

A lot of fans will have problems with it because of new actors playing the roles, but I thought the casting was very well done, and what members of the original crew still remain aren't getting any younger (lot of that going around...) My favorite of the new cast was the guy who played McCoy. I think Mr. Kelly would have approved.

Anyway, yeah, there were some problems here and there and things I didn't completely like, however, I thought it was very entertaining, and I will be in line for the next one.

My theory on the quantity of red matter was that the only place Spock could get it was at the Vulcan Sam's Club, where it is only available in bulk.

the engine room looked like a brewery

...a case of expediency (cheap filming location) over doing something right (actually
building an engine room set)... but at least you know the reason they have to
keep ejecting the warp core all the time So much for the antiseptic
future where you can't hurt yourself from excessive stupidity.

Red Matter

Every time I saw that thing I kept wanting to jump up and scream "Ladies and Gentlemen... the universe's biggest gumball... and it's ALL MINE!!!"

...I am halfway tempted for a 3rd and 4th film outing just for s*ts and giggles
