TSR Death Note Cameos

Post by cullenk »

Has anyone noticed the cameos by Death Note characters in the "Edge of Heaven" episode of TSR? My son found out about it in a post on a fan art site, and we checked it out, and there they were.

There is a scene showing pedistrians outside the hair salon reacting to the ruckus inside the shop (Kaname is in the process of clobbering Sosuke, who has just pulled a gun on his hair stylist).

When you freeze frame or slo-mo it, you see a girl on the right who looks like Misa Misa, and a boy on the right who looks like Light. A few frames later, a guy who looks a LOT like L comes by on a bicycle.

Also, I wonder if it was a coincidence that the shop was name "Juon"?

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

I was going to do a screen capture, but someone on YouTube saved me the trouble. Here's the scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3I7DJbTQTs

Ha~! I remember the scene and I DO remember myself reacting to "some known characters" XD Still - good one :D

Heh, in any other anime Sousuke's hairstyle would go as 'trendy' xD

EDIT: Oshi-! I just realised that this one of the VERY few animes we see char's hair growing! Tho it's JUST Sousuke... hmm..

Could be because everyone else gets their hair cut regularly?

I didn't recall the scene at first, and then it hit me again. Wow. For being the translator of the FMP! light novels, I can't believe that I forgot a scene. T-T That's borderline pathetic...

Anyway, I like Sousuke's hairstyle. It's kind of like how mine is! Spiky, but not because it was styled that way on purpose! XD

Maybe Kaname was afraid that if Sosuke let his hair grow out much longer someone might mistake him for a Gundam pilot.

XDDDDDDDDDDDD

BEST. COMMENT. EVER. XD

Well, at least Sousuke ACTS the part of grizzled war veteran. Those Gundam pilots almost always act like kids who want to fight for justice, or some far-fetched ideal like that... I mean, who in their right minds would let an emotionally attached person fight? BOOT CAMP DRILLS THAT RIGHT OUT OF YOU!! :( You do not question orders. You execute them. You do not ask why. You just do it. You do not fight for some glorified ideal. You fight because the military demands it of you.

That's one reason why I think FMP! is far more realistic than Gundam would EVER be. (Although, credit where credit is due, Gundam Wing actually had a bit of that, with Heero. He at least acted like a soldier piloting a mecha.)

... Did you just ask if Death Note, the Shinigami/Light/L manga, occur around the same time as Gundam Wing? Because Gundam Wing was from 1995-6. Deathnote was 2003-6. Heck, they aren't even in the same timeline. :D

I AM interesed in how you drew that connection, though. On a similar note, what does Death Note have to do with either Gundam Wing OR Full Metal Panic?

Gundam Wing was a heavy, somber mecha, where it was essentially 5 kids fighting a (BARELY plausible) war against a massive group called Oz (at the beginning, at least), which everyone hated, and then becoming heroes and saviors through a series of long, difficult, and costly battles. It was ACTUALLY REALISTIC, though. Gundam Heavyarms was practically ALWAYS running out of bullets, and they showed Troa even negotiating to buy crates of ammo a couple of times. A very good show which engages the reader from the beginning, and doesn't have impossibly overpowered mechas fighting non-stop with a small army behind them, unlike most of the Gundam series.

Full Metal Panic! is a silly/serious (it switches between the two) mecha anime which is based around several pilots, a few children with the ability to foresee technological advances and bring them into the present, and a submarine based on said super-advanced technology. The series is plausible, and works hard to give a basis to its technological developments (MAKING OUR JOB A F'ING PAIN IN THE ASS! TOO DAMN MANY TECHNICAL TERMS THAT WE HAVE TO TRANSLATE FROM JAPANESE TO ENGLISH!!!). An excellent show which is engaging, touching, and hilarious all at the same time (The only one I think is better would be Clannad, but that one was INSANELY AMAZING for an anime. No mechas, though. It was more of a romance anime, set in present day Japan. Now I'm totally off-topic. :-P )

Death Note is a dark psychological thriller, often employing powerful emotional tugs while questioning good and evil, and who is right and who is wrong. It's explanation for everything is pretty much supernatural (well, the people die in supernatural ways. Light uses technology pretty well, I'll give the writer that.), and there's this inhuman monster floating over everything, like some invincible, super evil, bug-eyed demi-god who just kills people for kicks. Honestly? A VERY good read, and incredibly engaging for people who like an intellectual challenge (personally, I prefer Liar Game, but this is good too) AND to people who just want a different type of story that's incredibly engaging.

... Anyway, now that I'm done ranting, back to what you were talking about.

Ok, FMP and Gundam Wing, sure. They have a bit of plot similarities. I can't see ANY between Death Note and the other two... I mean, don't get me wrong, they are all great series, but I can't find anything in Death Note that was similar to either of the other two.

In other news, if we are going to list random anime that we love, I can DEFINITELY procure a list. My 1 TB hard drive has over a third of it dedicated to anime, and I need to buy a new hard drive for more space soon. :-P (Alphabetical order)

AIR
Clannad
Code Geass
Full Metal Panic!
Fullmetal Alchemist
Gundam Wing
Heroic Age
Kanon
Love Hina
Myself ; Yourself (SEVERELY UNDERRATED)
Shakugan No Shana
Solty Rei
Trigun
Vandread
Witchblade
Yu Yu Hakusho
Zero No Tsukaima

... And now that I've created a post that's 3/4 of a lightyear long, I think I'm done.

P.S. To summarize: Where did Death Note come from and there's a list of anime that I loved. I REALLY need to stop going to bed at two in the morning. It makes me rant...

i think Mika was asking if TSR and Death Note appeared around the same time...

I remember finding out about this trivia, but i didn't know Death Note back then so i didn't care much. Of course changed when i bought the manga as they came out in an orgasmic frenzy. Too bad the success of Death Note is also the reason I can never read it a second time.
