Will be putting the fix in thur / friday this week I figure... so if I take the router down I have time to figure
what (else) I may have buggered up.

reference, play Wing Commander.

VPN for TPB?

My provider had to block TPB due to a lawsuit filed by some jackasses called brein.
They had a stupid judge that seemed to be pretty clueless. *sigh*

So they had to block a couple of IP's and block DNS requests but since I'm running my own DNS server it's not really a problem <grin>

Still it's always nice to have a backup alternative.

Okay, got the VPN working and tested with the old Cisco 5.x VPN client and with the Shrewsoft 2.2.2 client.
Too bad I had to shut down the SSH access in the process.

Anyone wants an ID, let me know.

Tomorrow, laundry and saying farewell to ANOTHER employee at work... sometimes I just wonder...
Then I got the weekend shift, and whatever that tosses in my face.

@Taurec
Sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't've just gotten into law given how glacially slow it moves.... and no SLA.

Two lazy days off after the weekend... surprisingly nothing too out of the ordinary, thankfully.

Also got a question for the more IT inclined ppl on the board : any rack mount server makes / models ppl can
think of that I should be on the lookout for 2nd hand if I wanted to use it for a NAS / media / file server
that meets the following specs :

- rackmount (of course)
- 2U+ in size
- 4+ drive bays minimum, 3.5" bay size
- SATA drive connectivity
- optical drive
- GigE network connectivity

So far HP DL3xx and Dell Poweredge fit the formfactor I want, but use SCSI interfaces -- and finding SCSI hard
disks that DON'T break your bank card is hard enough these days...

I would stay clear from dell and hp >3 years.

Get a cheap rackmount case http://www.newegg.com/Server-Chassis/SubCategory/ID-412

I recommend at least 4U so you can use silent 120mm fans to reduce noise.

This one looks nice:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811147155

Get a cheap asus non UEFI mainboard .. we can mod it to be a dell
if you go zfs get a lot of memory

Not that I doubt your advice Taurec, but as a question, any specific reason why to avoid them? Crappy parts? Crappy workmanship? Something else?

Part of the reason I was looking towards that was picking up some gear on fleabay or similar... or raiding
the corporate junkpile when it came time for stuff to be lifecycled for cheap.

Lovely lovely day gaming... did a couple hours of Left for Dead... plus up to the F103 Excalibur missions
on WC Saga again... D**N do I LOOOOOVE autotrack!

Well our company is strictly DELL and we flirted a bit with HP.
Since 2000 we are in the hosting biz and after 3 / 4 years they become time bombs ... Understandable with a 3 year write off.
But sure as hell, they don't make em like they used to.

The rack ones can be noisy at least the 1u ones <g>

Noise is _A_ concern, but not too big on my list -- you're talking to a guy who lived next to a jet turbine
of a dual proc system for a couple years. Plus the rack's nicely tucked into a seperate room with a closeable
door...

Another question from your experience Taurec -- what usually went? P/S? Mobo? HDD? Anything and Everything under
the sun at random times?

Checking locally, and found this -- http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX39077 -- which sounds like it
can be the basis of a system. Problem is I'll have to go a research again CPU / mobo specs and compatibility...

Back to work tomorrow... got notification most of our "other" work's been shipped back to the client themselves...
THIS is going to be an interesting few days, to say the least.

All of the above .. <g> Esp the ones that didn't have airco 24/7
That case looks good, since it's E-ATX it means everything will fit.

I got myself a asus m5a78l holds 4 ddr3 dimms 16Gb and a 905e amd and it's running 4 VM's on windows 2012 Hyper-v

I was wondering what EATX / EEB was... nearly had a heartattack when I saw THOSE motherboard prices.
If it'll take regular ATX motherboards, then all I have to do is find a cheap cpu/mobo combo that has
a scadload of SATA connectors, and I'm off to the races, hardware-wise.

Also got a recommend on this -- http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX39926 -- and this http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX46547
From what I can tell, buy the case, buy a bunch of HDDs, no OS to purchase or install... and I'm laughing.

BOY did it feel good today to slam a bunch of tickets back on the client with the short explanation
"we have been descoped of this work as of XXXX hours yesterday. If you have issues, please see YYYY."

Tall and Cold, I feel like setting a forest fire and dancing naked in celebration...

Dunno if anyone's playing GTA V or not... but figured this'd bring a smile to people's faces.

Either ppl aren't on their meds... or it's a blowout year at the Darwin awards.

Friend of mine got that synology ... and true it's set and forget ... but with my Hyper-v box I am running synology DSM in a VM and have access to all the funny goodies while running a voip/mail and UT99 game server <grin>

It depends what type of user you want to be. Just get a NAS and dump files on it ... or make your DIY NAS do funky stuff..

For now, for the money I have to lay out I just want something very turnkey... not really in the mood or mindset
to spend alot of time in the setup / debug phase of it....

Friday can't come soon enough... i just want it to be the weekend.

I would go for a diy box and slap freenas on it ... <G>
What I dislike about the synology is the proprietary design .. if you blow a psu or contoller you are screwed.

Well, that'll be the risk I have to weigh / take depending on what I go for. BELIEVE me, I _HATE_ getting
locked into anything, but given that this is my first NAS, my leanings is get turnkey, get it working with
minimal fuss, learn some more and play, and next NAS apply that to a DIY solution.

Tall and Cold... need longer weekend with better weather...
