Looks like I'll move my inquiry. Probably somewhere more appropriate.

...asked this in the Armory:

is there ANY EXTERNAL PHYSICAL difference(s) between the AV8B and
AV8B+ that'd allow you to discern between the two? Been a long time
since I picked up a book on the AV8, but I do know looking at the AV8A,
you can just TELL it's the A model *eugh-YUK!*

...and I see Tau had to bring back his beloved Hind-D/E debate :-D

As for the F-35, probably why it was never shown in the anime was the
design wasn't finalized yet -- FMP! the anime was started late 2000-early 2001,
wasn't it? Even the V-22 didn't make it in for that wierd chopper they
had on the Danaan.

Just my 0.02

On a good day, a Tomahawk can fly into the door of a two-car garage at the distance of several hundred miles. And that can ruin your whole day.

Actually I did find a physical difference, between the two models. The Harrier 2 Plus has a longer, more needle like nose, the Harrier 2 has a more blunt nose.

Harrier 2+

There is a physical difference between the two. Slight, but there is a difference.

Hmmm.... and the AV8s in FMP! have that nose mod, so it's hard to tell
which model it is  But a good guess is the Plus model -- cutting
edge and all

What I am wondering is whether this inconsistency is only on the part of the anime producers. Shoji Gatou (novel author) may have been wrong as well, or correct, or maybe he didn't specify at all. I haven't read the novels before End of Day by Day, so somebody needs to confirm for me.
